Population displacement and urban conflict: Global evidence from more than 3300 flood events

In this paper, we study the effect of displacement population into cities on urban conflict in developing countries. To do so, construct a novel measure exposure to floods, using data more than 3300 flood events worldwide, as an exogenous source displacement. We combine with city level observations thousands social disorder over period 1985–2015. Exposure floods is found be associated higher intensity disorder. Our evidence suggests that effects occur part through large cities. Exploring information detail, find association between growth and strongest for related public service provision, prices wages.
